Alvaiazere Property
Alvaiazere derives from the Arabic word Al-baiaz The 1st Baron of Alvaiazere was the main Physician of King John V1 of Portugal. Alvaiázere (pron. IPA: [ is a municipality in Portugal with a total area of 160.5 km² and a total population of 8,112 inhabitants.
The municipality is composed of 7 parishes, and is located in the district of Leiria. The municipality is bordered by the municipalities of Ansião (to the north), Figueiró dos Vinhos (to the northeast and east), Ferreira do Zêzere (to the southeast), Ourém (to the southwest) and Pombal (to the west).
The present Mayor is Paulo Delgado Morgado, elected by the Social Democratic Party.
The municipal holiday is on June 13 The name has Arab origins but it is also sure that in ancient times the Mountain of Alvaiázere has been populated by proto-historical people and later by the Romans. Roman coins have been discovered in 1751 in the area of Pelmá and it is certain that a section of the Roman road connecting Tomar to Conímbriga went through Alvaiázere.
In a place called Carreira de Cavalos there are remains of an old castle that is said to be Moorish. Its first charter dates back to 1200. D. Sancho I was then the King of Portugal. In 1388, King D. João I promoted Alvaiázere to a Vila (small town) and King D. Manuel not only gave it a new charter in 1514, but also a new recipient: The Duke of Cadaval. The Parish Church had as patron the Knights of the Templar and later the Knights of Christ. But the memories left by History are not only in Alvaiázere.
Almoster
was under the patronage of the Convent of Lorvão, which proves its antiquity. Maçãs de Dona Maria, that has belonged to the House of the Marquis of Vila Real till 1641 was a Council and in the 16th century King D. Manuel gave it the charter.
Ribeira de Alge
is a favourite place and its Fluvial Beach has given a new charm to its banks. From Pussos there is record of a donation made in the 13th century by the Grand Master of the Knights of the Templer and it is also known that King D. Manuel gave it the charter in the 16th century. And Alvaiázere reminds us of the south. We can feel it when we look at the tables with good olive oil and the Rabaçal cheese that takes its taste from a plant called Santa Maria. In what concerns drinks we must choose a wine from Terras de Sicó.
Alvaiazere is situated in central portugal.
