Leiria has its own castle built to prevent the Moors from retaking the town once it had been repatriated by Afonso Henriques, it was in the middle ages that the importance of Leiria increased with many feudal government hosting themselves there.
Throughout the centuries Leiria has grown, in the 15th century the gothic palace was built on the orders of the King and partially restored in the 20th century it is the finest piece of Gothic architecture in Portugal.
Modern day Leiria has a number of industries largely down to its favorable location, the industries include plastic molding, chemical, and steel fabrication industries. As the Portuguese economy rises to meet its European counterparts, Leiria will become an important centre both economically and politically and in the meantime the continued rise in golf courses and other leisure based industries will continue.
