Property South of the Tejo

especially in the coastal areas is about to become the next property hot spot in Portugal with a brand new  International airport approved and a high speed rail link, this area of the Alentejo is about to witness a boom in property prices.
Already endowed with stunning coastline and one of the best climates in Europe the area also has a history stretching back to the Romans and beyond, there are two world heritage sites in easy driving distance, Evora and a little further away Tomar.
There is such a lot of beach that finding a quiet spot is not difficult and there is no shortage of choice when it comes to restaurants and beach bars. If it is to your liking, live entertainment can be found on and close to the beach. The old fishing villages along the way such as Sesimbra, Sines and Setubal are charming, here you can still watch fish caught from the beach with the traditional boats and nets, it goes without saying that this is a great place to buy fresh fish and that the local fish restaurants are excellent.
Travel a little inland and you will find charming quintas and vineyards where you can indulge in a little wine tasting, some of which are internationally recognised as fine wines. Castles, Monasteries and other building of historical or cultural interest have been turned into Pousadas which are state owned hotels similar to the Paradors in Spain.

Although property in the Alentejo is still relatively cheap it is not difficult to predict a sharp rise in prices in the not too distant future. Apart from the changes in infrastructure I have already mentioned there is a comprehensive road building scheme linking up the entire country, which one has to remember is only 560kms up and 220kms across. It could be said that the river Tejo divides the country in half.
Although the climate culture and agriculture in the Alentejo is indicative of other Mediterranean countries it may be worth mentioning that the coast of Portugal is an entirely Atlantic coast; to this there are both plus and minus points. The Atlantic is colder and has a lot of time where the `surf is up’- great for surfers but not so great for leisurely swimming.
The Alentejo has a lot going for it, It is due to expand its interest to the property investor and there can be little doubt that property south of the Tejo will become a hot spot with opportunities  for buy to let, B&B and other tourist related businesses will increase in the near future.
